Breaking news: Mourinho's comments about Lukaku show how Chelsea and Manchester United need to approach him, after his comments showed he is a traitor to both clubs .
Chelsea are in the midst of a dilemma
with Romelu Lukaku, yet comments
made by former boss Jose Mourinho could
help the Blues navigate through these
troubled waters.
Lukaku, 28, stunned the club last week
after telling Italian media of his frustrations
at Stamford Bridge, just months after
rejoining the club in a £97.5million move
from Inter Milan.
The Belgian was dropped from Thomas
Tuchel's matchday squad for Sunday's
2-2 draw with Liverpool and the German
revealed he would hold crunch talks
with the striker over his comments.
Yet the Blues could do worse than pay
heed to comments made by Mourinho in
order to steady the ship. The Portuguese
managed Lukaku at Manchester United
and last summer reflected on how he
believes the Belgian should be managed.
'[In his first spell] at Chelsea, he was
still a kid. At Manchester United, he
was still developing. At Inter he became
the top man,' Mourinho told The Times
in June.
'He became loved - a big love from the
supporters, love from teammates,
great relations with the coach.
‘He's a big guy, physically so strong, but
there is also a kid inside who needs that
love, needs that support, needs to
feel important.'
Chelsea boss Tuchel has a history
of falling out with players, having made
young striker Emre Mor crawl on all fours
in training in a bid to teach the Turk
to work harder.
But he also has a track record of
handling star players with care. He
did not suffer any major fallouts with
PSG stars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar
, and also got the best out of Pierre-
Emerick Aubameyang at Borussia
Dortmund.
The Arsenal star was stripped of the
captaincy last month and exiled from
first team training, yet Tuchel revealed
how he handled the Gabonese
when he committed disciplinary
breaches in Germany.
'Maybe he [Aubameyang] arrived five
minutes late on the training ground,
that can happen with him! But if he
does this, he is in a hurry, he excuses,
he feels sorry, he has still a smile
on his face,' Tuchel said.
'When we wanted him to be on time
, we told him the meeting was 10.45am
when the meeting was 11am so there
was a good chance he would be there
with everyone else.
'It's not the biggest problem. But don't
forget that he was also a top, top
professional who never missed any
training session.'
