Breaking news: Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United striker is leaving the club this season .
Edinson Cavani is expected to leave
Manchester United when his contract
expires this summer, reputed journalist
Fabrizio Romano reports.
The Uruguay international had an
impressive debut campaign for the
Red Devils last term, bagging 17 goals
across all competitions.
Hence, he was convinced to stay for
another year, but the current season
has been far from successful with just
two goals so far.
The stunning return of Cristiano Ronaldo
last summer has significantly reduced
his game time over the course of the campaign.
It is now reported that he will pursue
a new challenge when his contract expires
in June. The 34-year-old is exploring
a move to La Liga.
Our view:
Cavani struggled with injuries last season
, but had a terrific second half
to the campaign where he was hugely
impressive in the Europa League.
It was a no-brainer to keep him for another
year, but he would not have envisaged
the homecoming of Ronaldo last summer.
Cavani was the subject of interest from
Barcelona recently, but he was convinced
to stay by interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
It seems unlikely that the Blaugrana
will return for him, having recruited Pierre
-Emerick Aubameyang on a permanent deal.
He should still receive plenty of transfer
offers as he can be a consistent goalgetter if
he is handed a regular run of starts.
Cavani is currently struggling with a groin
injury and appears a major doubt to face
Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday.
